Deadline approaching to submit applications for Premiers Athletic Awards

The Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation wishes to advise potential applicants of the Premiers Athletic Awards (formerly known as the Athlete Assistance Program) that the deadline for submitting applications to provincial sport organizations is January 17. Award recipients will be announced in March of this year.

The Premiers Athletic Awards are designed to assist the provinces athletes by providing financial assistance to allow them to compete at the national and international levels. The program will provide qualifying athletes with additional financial assistance to help offset training costs, ensuring that they are provided an opportunity to further develop their skills. The total budget of the program is $75,000, representing an increase of $25,000 over last year s budget.

Athletes must submit an application to their provincial sport organization by January 17. PSOs will then rank athletes based on applications and forward their ranking to the department for final review by a newly-established awards selection committee consisting of individuals with an extensive knowledge of athletes in the province.

The Premiers Athletic Awards Program is open to all residents of Newfoundland and Labrador who are registered with a provincial sport organization recognized by the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. Eligible athletes must compete for Newfoundland and Labrador at the Canada Games and other national and regional competitions. Athletes must also be attending an educational institution on a full-time basis. Further information about the program can be obtained through provincial sport organizations or through the department.
