Silviculture funding announced for Harbour Main-Whitbourne

Ed Byrne, Minister of Natural Resources, and Tom Hedderson, MHA for Harbour Main-Whitbourne and Minister of Education, announced $27,700 for a silviculture project taking place in the district.  The funding is being provided through the 2005 Provincial Silviculture Program.

According to Minister Byrne, the $7.3 million allocated in Budget 2005 toward silviculture programming and research and development initiatives demonstrates governments commitment to responsible forest management.

Investing into the future of our provincial forest resource through the planting of tree seedlings is an integral component of governments responsible approach to sustainable forest management, said Minister Byrne. Silviculture programs such as this one will help ensure healthy fibre sources are available for the future.

"Government funding that provides local employment opportunities is certainly welcome," added Minister Hedderson.

This project will see the planting of approximately 250,000 tree seedlings on previously harvested sites in the vicinity of Clam River.  The tree seedlings were provided by the Provincial Tree Nursery at Wooddale.

The project, which started on August 1, will create approximately 15 person weeks of employment and will be completed by the end of August.  Budland Enterprises Limited was awarded the contract for the project.
