$74,149 announced for reforestation initiative in St. Barbe district

Ed Byrne, Minister of Natural Resources, and Wallace Young, MHA for St. Barbe district, have announced funding in the amount of $74,149 for a silviculture project taking place in the district.  The funding is being provided through governments $7.3 million 2005 Provincial Silviculture Program.

Minister Byrne says the investment into this silviculture project clearly demonstrates governments commitment to continue to manage the forest resources of Newfoundland and Labrador on a sustainable basis.

Silviculture initiatives such as this one are a critical component of our provinces reforestation effort, said Minister Byrne. The planting of tree seedlings throughout St. Barbe district will help support the future of the forest industry on the Northern Peninsula which makes a vital contribution to the economy of that region.

Mr. Young feels this is a great announcement for the district of St. Barbe.  This project will provide some short-term employment through the planting of nearly half a million seedlings in the area of Mooney Block.  It will also help to ensure the long-term sustainability of an industry that is critical to the economy of the Northern Peninsula.

This project will involve the planting of 420,000 white spruce seedlings, which were grown at the Provincial Tree Nursery located at Wooddale, over an area of 280 hectares in the vicinity of Mooney Block.

Tercan Holding Inc. was awarded the contract for this project which is expected to create 50 person weeks of employment.  Project activity started in early August and will take two to three weeks to complete.
