Silviculture project approved for Humber Valley district

Ed Byrne, Minister of Natural Resources, and Kathy Goudie, MHA for Humber Valley, have announced $69,100 for two silviculture projects taking place in the district this summer.  The funding is being provided through the departments $7.3 million 2005 Provincial Silviculture Program.

Minister Byrne says silviculture projects taking place in Humber Valley district, as well as throughout the province this summer, will play a vital role in sustaining a future wood supply for the province.

Reforestation efforts through the planting of tree seedlings continue to demonstrate governments commitment to responsible forest management, said Minister Byrne.  In addition, the provincial silviculture program creates meaningful employment opportunities for many individuals in rural communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

These reforestation initiatives help to ensure the long-term viability of the forestry industry, said Ms. Goudie.  This industry is a major contributor to the local economy in my district of Humber Valley.  I am pleased to see that our government is recognizing the importance of this industry by committing funding for site preparation and the planting of over half a million spruce tree seedlings.

One project, which is taking place in the vicinity of Chouse Brook, will involve planting a mixture of 550,000 spruce seedlings produced over an area of 200 hectares of cutovers.  The tree seedlings were grown at the Wooddale Provincial Tree Nursery.

Tercan Holdings Ltd. was awarded the contract for the project which is valued at $55,000.  The project, which began July 11, is creating 120 person weeks of employment.

The second project will involve site preparation activity in the area of Chain Lakes and Howley.  Once this preparation work is completed, these areas will be ready for tree seedling planting in 2006.  The contract for this project is valued at $14,100 and was awarded to Quest Inc.  This project, which will create six person weeks of employment, is expected to be completed by mid-August.
