Government announces
$375,000 in silviculture funding for The Straits and White Bay North
Ed Byrne, Minister of
Natural Resources, and Trevor Taylor, Minister of Fisheries and
Aquaculture and MHA for The Straits and White Bay North, today
announced funding in the amount of $375,000 for a major silviculture
initiative taking place in the district this summer. The funding is
being provided through governments $7.3 million Provincial
Silviculture Program for 2005.
According to Minister Byrne, responsible management of the
provinces forest resource through meaningful silviculture work will
ensure the forests remain productive into the future.
"Silviculture initiatives such as this one taking place on the
Northern Peninsula are a vital component of governments
reforestation effort," said Minister Byrne. "The funding announced
today clearly demonstrates that the effective management of our
forest resource is a priority of this government. In addition, such
work provides a significant boost to local economies particularly
those in rural communities."
"This $375,000 tree planting initiative will generate important work
opportunities on the Northern Peninsula," said Minister Taylor.
"This is a good example of a strategic investment that is within our
financial means. Just as we need to plant new trees to manage our
forests, we need to grow opportunities to strengthen our rural
economy."
This initiative will consist of the planting of one million tree
seedlings on 750 hectares of non-regenerated land and the
pre-commercial thinning of approximately 200 hectares of over dense
softwood stands. The project, which is expected to create 400 person
weeks of employment, was scheduled to commence on May 30 and will be
completed by the end of September.
