New appointments made to
Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro board
Ed Byrne, Minister of Natural
Resources, today announced four appointments to the Board of Directors of
Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro. William Kelly of Wabush has been
reappointed to the board while new appointments include Edna Turpin and
Thomas Clift, both of St. John�s, and Linda Sheppard of Corner Brook.
"I am pleased to welcome
these appointments to the Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro board," said
Minister Byrne. "We are embarking on a very exciting and challenging
time for Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro as we move forward to expand the
role of Hydro and seek potential development opportunities for the Lower
Churchill hydroelectric resource. I look forward to working with the Hydro
board in advancing government�s agenda on these initiatives."
The appointment of Edna Turpin
is for a 36-month term while the appointments of Linda Sheppard, Thomas
Clift and Bill Kelly are for terms of 24 months. The appointments were
effective January 1, 2005.
Minister Byrne also expressed
thanks to the former board members whose terms had expired December 31,
2004. They include Barbara Fong, Elmer Harris and David Smallwood.

Biographies
William Kelly
Mr. Kelly has served on the Board of Directors of Newfoundland and Labrador
Hydro since 1999. He was elected mayor of Wabush for 12 consecutive years,
1985 to 1998. He was a board member of the Wabush Airport Commission for
three years, 1995 to 1998. After high school graduation from St. Kevin�s
High School, Bell Island, he completed a certificate of electrical at the
local district vocational school. He has worked for over 30 years as an
industrical electrician at Wabush Mines. He holds an interprovincial
industrial electrical Journeyperson Canadian Red Seal Certification. His
apprenticeship program leading to this certification was augmented by
courses from American School, Chicago, Illinois.
Edna Turpin
Dr. Turpin, who holds a doctorate in education, is recognized globally as a
leader, policy maker, strategic planner, educator and communicator. She has
played a leadership role in the development of the education system of
Newfoundland and Labrador at both the secondary and post-secondary levels.
She was the president and chief executive officer of the Cabot College of
Applied Arts, Technology and Continuing Education and held various positions
within the Department of Education at the assistant deputy minister and
director level. Dr. Turpin was also the director of marketing and
international development at the College of the North Atlantic and, more
recently, worked in the aerospace industry in public relations and
marketing. Currently a member of the St. John�s Rotary Club, Dr. Turpin
has served with various other community and business organizations including
Newfoundland Ocean Industries Association, St. John�s Board of Trade,
Institute of Chartered Accountants of Newfoundland and Labrador, St. Patrick�s
Mercy Home Board of Governors, St. John�s Civic Centre, YM/YWCA, and
Canadian Red Cross Corporate Campaign.
Thomas Clift
For the past 25 years, Mr. Clift has been active in teaching, research,
training and consulting in the area of marketing management and strategy. He
is the associate dean (academic) at Memorial University�s Faculty of
Business Administration. He was worked in association with such companies as
Arthur D. Little Inc., Cambridge, Mass.; 3M Canada Inc., London, Ont.; and
Nortel, Mississauga, Ont., and as well has consulted for a variety of
companies in the marine communications, geo-technical engineering and
biotechnology sectors in Atlantic Canada. Mr. Clift has received a number of
teaching awards while on staff at Memorial. He is currently a member of the
board of directors of the St. John�s Maple Leafs/St. John�s Sports and
Entertainment Ltd., the Newfoundland Chapter of the Canadian Special
Olympics, and the Johnson GEO Centre, as well as volunteering with the
Waterford Foundation.
Linda Sheppard
Ms. Sheppard is the assistant manager, member service, with the Newfoundland
and Labrador Credit Union in Corner Brook. Previously, she has worked in the
banking and wholesale industries. Ms. Sheppard has completed several
financial planning and BDS courses through the Financial Institute of Canada
with continued internal training in the financial administration field on an
annual basis. She volunteers with such organizations as the Western
Newfoundland Home Builders� Association, Canadian Red Cross Society,
Canadian Cancer Society, and the food bank.
