Announced in June 2005, the one-time initiative has assisted hundreds of crab industry workers, and provided funding support for over 160 community projects throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. The Crab Worker Support Program has supported community proponents in rural and urban areas in the province which will positively impact safety issues, recreational and municipal infrastructure, and tourism projects, stated Minister Jack Byrne. We are confident that the support program has been working as it was intended; by addressing employment shortfalls for crab industry workers which may have arisen due to the late opening of this year's crab fishery. New projects total $101,000 and include the following:
Additionally, $10,900 has been approved to provide increased funding support for previously approved projects located in Bay Roberts, Bonavista, Comfort Cove-Newstead, Greenspond, Lamaline, and Summerford. Since the establishment of the Crab Workers Support Program, the funding has been well received by communities, development associations, recreational groups, towns and those participating in the program. The program has supported a wide variety of important work initiatives which will improve, further develop and contribute to communities in the province, added Minister Byrne.
