Town of Paradise offered Multi-Year Capital Works Agreement

Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs; Minister Dianne Whalen, MHA for the District of Conception Bay East and Bell Island; and Elizabeth Marshall, MHA for the District of Topsail, announced today that $7.9 million has been offered to the Town of Paradise under the Multi-Year Capital Works Program.

"Municipal infrastructure is the foundation for our cities and towns," said Minister Byrne. "Solid infrastructure through programs such as the Multi-Year Capital Works Program is a key aspect to economic development. I am very pleased that we have once again entered into this arrangement with Paradise."

"I am very pleased the Town of Paradise has been offered this capital works funding," said Minister Whalen. "I have worked extremely hard to ensure that municipalities in my district such as Paradise have funding to address their infrastructure priorities. As the former mayor of Paradise, I personally know how important it is for municipalities to leverage this kind of funding for major infrastructure projects."

MHA Elizabeth Marshall said, "This is great news for the Town of Paradise. Improvements to infrastructure are very important to ensure that our residents have the best possible municipal services. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to the infrastructure needs of our municipalities and this announcement today is a clear indication of this commitment."

"We have identified most of this funding for water and sewer projects," said Fred Brown, mayor of Paradise. "We are also going to use some of this funding for road work. The Town of Paradise is the fastest growing municipalities in Atlantic Canada. Being able to negotiate a Multi-Year Capital Works Agreement will enable us to provide services to our residents in a more efficient manner."

The provincial government has committed $85 million under the 2005-2008 Multi-Year Capital Works Program. This program is cost-shared on a 50/50 basis between the provincial government and larger municipalities.

In total, combined with the Municipal Capital Works Program and the Canada-Newfoundland Infrastructure Program, governments have committed $140 million for municipal infrastructure. It is estimated that these programs will create approximately 90,000 person weeks of employment throughout the province.
