$12.5 million offered to Corner Brook under Multi-Year Capital Works Agreement

Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal and Provincial Affairs; Premier Danny Williams, MHA for the District of Humber West; and Minister Tom Marshall, MHA for the District of Humber East, announced today that $12.5 million has been offered to the City of Corner Brook under the Multi-Year Capital Works Agreement.

"Municipal infrastructure is the backbone of our municipalities," said Premier Williams. "Improvements to infrastructure are incredibly beneficial for our residents and that is why the provincial government supports these programs. It is through programs such as the Multi-Year Capital Works Agreement that we are able to provide much-needed funding to larger municipalities for their capital works needs."

Minister Byrne announced funding for the Multi-Year Capital Works Program last November. "I had heard from municipalities, consultants and engineers that we needed to have an earlier announcement date for capital works projects. This ensures that work can be started earlier in the season and at the best prices. I am very pleased that we were able to reach this agreement with the City of Corner Brook."

"This is the first time that the City of Corner Brook has entered into a Multi-Year Capital Works Agreement," said Minister Marshall. "This program gives the city more leverage for their capital works needs as it will give the city three years to plan their projects. It also averages out to $4 million a year, more than double the average amount of funding they had in previous years."

The provincial government has committed $85 million under the 2005-08 Multi-Year Capital Works Program. This program is cost-shared on a 50/50 basis between the provincial government and larger municipalities.

In total, combined with the Municipal Capital Works Program and the Canada-Newfoundland Infrastructure Program, governments have committed $140 million for municipal infrastructure. It is estimated that these programs will create approximately 90,000 person weeks of employment throughout the province.
