Approximately $3.6 million offered
to Gander for Multi-Year Capital Works Agreement
Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal and Provincial
Affairs, and Kevin OBrien, MHA for the District of Gander, announced today that
approximately $3.6 million has been offered to the Town of Gander under the
Multi-Year Capital Works Agreement.
"I am very pleased that we are able to offer this funding to the Town of
Gander," said Minister Byrne. "It is important to me and this government that
our municipalities remain strong and viable. One of the key areas in which we
can achieve this is through commitments to municipal infrastructure."
MHA Kevin OBrien said: "Todays announcement is great news for the residents of
Gander. I have worked very hard for infrastructure needs within my district and
I am pleased that the provincial government has identified this funding for this
much needed work."
"We have committed much of this funding towards roads, water, sewer and a new
fire pumper truck," said Claude Elliott, Mayor of Gander. "This three-year
agreement allows us to prioritize our infrastructure needs while still providing
the best possible service to our residents."
The provincial government has committed $85 million under the 2005-08
Multi-Year Capital Works Program. This program is cost-shared on a 50/50 basis
between provincial and larger municipal governments.
In total, combined with the Municipal Capital Works Program and the
Canada-Newfoundland Infrastructure Program, governments have committed $140
million for municipal infrastructure. It is estimated that these programs will
create approximately 90,000 person weeks of employment throughout the province.
