$2.3 million offered to Wabush
under Multi-Year Capital Works Agreement
Jack Byrne, Minister of Municipal and Provincial
Affairs, announced today that approximately $2.3 million has been offered to the
Town of Wabush under the Multi-Year Capital Works Agreement.
"The Multi-Year Capital Works Program is designed to provide infrastructure
funding for larger municipalities so that there is no competition between them
and smaller municipalities," said Minister Byrne. "All our municipalities have
infrastructure needs and I am pleased that we have reached this agreement with
the Town of Wabush for the next three years."
"The Town of Wabush has a great deal of road work which we have identified as a
priority for the term of this agreement," said James Farrell, Mayor of Wabush.
"We have targeted funding for some water and sewer work as well. We are very
pleased that this much-needed work will be carried out shortly."
The provincial government has committed $85 million under the 2005-08
Multi-Year Capital Works Program. This program is cost-shared on a 50/50 basis
between the provincial government and larger municipalities.
In total, combined with the Municipal Capital Works Program and the
Canada-Newfoundland Infrastructure Program, governments have committed $140
million for municipal infrastructure. It is estimated that these programs will
create approximately 90,000 person weeks of employment throughout the province.
