Newfoundlander wins national saving and investing quiz Dianne Whalen, Minister of Government Services, congratulated Matthew Richard Denine of Mount Pearl on winning the Canadian Securities Administrators Test Your Financial IQ (TYFIQ) quiz. Matthew competed against thousands of young people from across the country to achieve this honour, said Minister Whalen. This quiz was an excellent exercise in getting our youth interested in and knowledgeable about their financial future. The younger we can get youth involved in how to manage their money, the earlier they will learn financial responsibility and how to save and invest their money for the future. The TYFIQ quiz ran from February 21 and March 21, 2005 and was open to young people ages 15 to 21. Participants had to achieve 60 per cent or higher on the quiz which tested youth on budgeting, saving and investing. Those who achieved that score were entered into a draw to win one of 13 personal digital camcorders. Thirteen winners were drawn from each province and territory and had to produce a video promoting the benefits of budgeting, saving and investing. The overall winner received a $2,000 cash scholarship. Mr. Denine is planning on attending Holland College in Prince Edward Island in the fall to pursue a law enforcement career.
