Details on registering ATVs

Dianne Whalen, Minister of Government Services, announced further details today on how ATV users can register ATVs that have not previously been properly registered.

This information is aimed at those people who have bought used ATVs through private sales and are unsure about whether the change in ownership was properly registered, or whether the vehicles were ever registered at all, said Minister Whalen.  We are offering an amnesty period on the registration and on the provincial sales tax for such vehicles.  We hope that ATV users will take this opportunity to ensure that their registration is accurate.

This amnesty period will remain in effect until May 18, 2006 and applies to vehicles that were sold privately.  Correspondence to confirm existing vehicle registration information is being mailed to ATV owners.  Owners of machines that are not properly registered should contact the Motor Registration Division at 1-888-729-0067, or in the metro area, 729-0067, or through the Web site at www.gov.nl.ca/gs/mr/atv.stm for information on how to properly register their vehicles.

Vehicle owners submitting a change in ownership for vehicles that had previously been registered will be charged a one-time $25 fee for that notice.  A one-time $50 registration fee will apply to vehicles not previously registered.  Part of the $50 fee will be dedicated to a new safety awareness campaign.  New, more visible licence plates will be provided and are now available throughout the province at Motor Registration Division offices and Government Service Centres that offer vehicle registration services.

I encourage anyone with a used ATV to update the registration on their vehicle as soon as possible, said Minister Whalen.   Proper registration is key to ensuring owner responsibility for their vehicles and as a guard against theft.  After May 18, 2006, failure to properly register a vehicle is an offence under the legislation.
