Charges laid in relation to industrial accident in Deer Lake

The Department of Government Services announced today that the Town of Deer Lake has been charged for alleged violations under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations in relation to an industrial accident in the town in 2003.

A town employee was seriously injured May 5, 2003 when the walls of the trench in which he was working collapsed and buried him. He was freed by fellow employees and treated in hospital.

On February 23, 2005, five charges were laid against the Town of Deer Lake as a result of an investigation by the Occupational Health and Safety Branch of the Department of Government Services.

The violations relate to the alleged failure of the Town of Deer Lake to ensure that employees received sufficient training in trench excavation work and the necessary safety precautions, and that appropriate procedures were followed.

The first appearance is scheduled for March 15 at Provincial Court in Corner Brook.
