Premier expresses
condolences on the passing of Edgar Baird
Danny Williams, Premier of
Newfoundland and Labrador, today expressed his condolences on the
passing of a distinguished Newfoundlander, Edgar Baird.
"I was very saddened to hear of Mr. Bairds death," Premier Williams
said. "He was a great Newfoundlander - an environmentalist, a leader
and a truly engaged citizen."
Born at Campbellton, Notre Dame Bay, Edgar Baird had distinguished
careers in both forestry and aviation. He served as the provinces
chief woods ranger and, during World War II, as superintendent of
the 960-man Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Corps in Scotland. Mr.
Baird also played a significant role in establishing the Town of
Gander.
"Edgar Baird was a dedicated volunteer, giving his support and time
to a number of important causes," said the Premier. "He founded the
Newfoundland chapter of the Junior Forest Rangers and served as the
first chairman of the Gander Local Improvement District. For good
reason, Gander chose to name both a street and a local trail in his
honour. In 1961 he closed down his own business to devote his full
attention to serving as a volunteer fire boss during the great
Bonavista North fire. I was very pleased to have been present in
September 2004 at his investiture into the Order of Newfoundland and
Labrador."
Premier Williams added, "Edgar Baird will be sadly missed,
especially in his beloved town of Gander. On behalf of all
Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, I express sincere and heartfelt
condolences to his family and many friends."
