Further environmental
clean-up at St. Anthonys former military site
The Minister of Environment and
Conservation, Tom Osborne, today announced that a contract has been
awarded for further environmental clean-up at the former military
base in St. Anthony.
Government announced $1 million funding in Budget 2005 for
environmental clean-up at St. Anthony, building on the approximately
$1 million government spent at the former military site in 2004.
Minister Osborne said: I am pleased that we have awarded the
contract for phase II of the environmental clean-up at St. Anthony
as we committed in Budget 2005. The contract has been awarded to
Sanexen Environmental Services of Varennes, Quebec and valued at
$1,097,630.
The contract will see the clean-up of PCB
contaminated material and the majority of hydrocarbon fuel contamination at the
site. Work is expected to begin during the week of October 10 and be
completed by the end of October. Further consideration will be given
to completing the remediation work on this site in 2006.
The minister noted that the environmental clean-up in St. Anthony in
the fall 2004 saw approximately 500 tonnes of PCB soil removed from
the site, as well as debris such as wood and metal.
Government acknowledges the importance of cleaning up contaminated
sites around the province and will continue to do so on a priority
basis, said Minister Osborne. This is an issue that government is
very cognizant of and we are taking action to address contaminated
sites around the province. We remain committed to protecting our
natural environment and creating healthier communities.
Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Trevor Taylor, MHA for The
Straits and White Bay North, said the investment and quick
turnaround time for the completion of the work is welcome news for
the people of St. Anthony. Cleaning up this former military site
has been a pressing issue for the residents of the area for some
time and I am pleased today to see government committing the
necessary money to address this environmental issue.
