Hunting season for big
game officially opens Tom
Osborne, Minister of Environment and Conservation, today advised the
public that the hunting season for big game begins this weekend in
many parts of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Most big game hunting seasons throughout the province will open on
Saturday, September 10, while small game, waterfowl hunting and
trapping seasons begin in a few weeks. The big game season for other
areas of the province will open on October 1.
Detailed information on this years hunting seasons and bag limits
can be found in the 2005-06 Newfoundland and Labrador Hunting and
Trapping Guide available at various government offices, including
the Department of Natural Resources and Wildlife Division offices.
The guide is also available on the Newfoundland and Labrador
government Web site
//www.gov.nl.ca/env/wildlife/licences/Guide 2005_2006.pdf
A total of 26,460 moose licences and 5,605 caribou licences have
been allocated for this years hunt. Minister Osborne noted that
moose quotas in the province were increased by 400 additional
licences since the publication of the 2005-06 Hunting and Trapping
Guide due to results of winter census conducted after the guide was
published. These increases were provided in Moose Management Areas 5
(+ 150), 35 (+ 50) and 45 (+ 200). Caribou quotas remain as
identified in the guide.
Responsible hunting and trapping are key to the overall success of
our provinces game and fur management programs, said Minister
Osborne. Hunters and trappers provide valuable information which
aids wildlife managers in the understanding and management of our
game and fur populations. We sincerely appreciate their
contributions and involvement as we work diligently to manage our
wildlife populations in a prudent and sustainable manner for
generations to come.
Minister Osborne wished all hunters and trappers a safe and
enjoyable season and reminded them to always keep conservation in
mind.
