Advocate delegates authority in child death investigation

Interim Child and Youth Advocate James Igloliorte said today that under the authority of Subsection 14(1) of the Child and Youth Advocate Act, he is delegating authority to Dr. Peter Markesteyn to continue and bring to a conclusion the investigation into the death of Zachary Turner.

Dr. Markesteyn, a noted coroner with experience in conducting child death reviews in other provinces, was appointed to conclude the investigation into the death of Zachary Turner.
The investigation into the death of Zachary Turner was started by former Child and Youth Advocate Lloyd Wicks.

The Child and Youth Advocate can undertake a review or investigate any matter relating to a child or youth generally so that s/he can act as an advocate for their rights and interests, and may inform the public or make recommendations to government.

Dr. Markesteyn, B.Sc. M.D. has extensive experience in the conduct of child and adult death reviews. He has been a consultant to the federal Department of Justice, and has taught in the Faculty of Medicine at several Canadian universities including the University of Alberta, the University of Manitoba, and Memorial University. He has also been retained as a consultant by the RCMP Training Division in Regina, the Atlantic Police Academy in Charlottetown, and by the Canadian Police College in Ottawa, and he has served some years as the Chief Medical Examiner (designate) for Newfoundland and Labrador.
