Minister announces awarding of contracts for
road work in Exploits, Grand Falls-Buchans and Humber East districts

Tom Rideout, Minister of Transportation and Works, today announced the awarding of contracts for road work in the Exploits, Grand Falls-Buchans and Humber East districts under the 2004-05 Provincial Roads Improvement Program.

Can Am Construction 2000 has been awarded a contract for more than $266,800 for bridge work in the Exploits and Grand Falls-Buchans districts.

Planned bridge work includes deck repairs to the Sir Robert Bond Bridge and rehabilitation of Bishops Falls-Grand Falls Central Railway overpass in the district of Exploits. In the Grand Falls-Buchans district, bridge work planned includes replacement of expansion joints on Rocky Pond Brook Bridge and Thunder Brook Bridge.

Government also plans to rehabilitate the east bound structure and adjustment of the approach grade at the Steady Brook Overpass, in the district of Humber East. This work will be carried out by Brook Enterprises Incorporated and is worth more than $349,900.

Tom Marshall, Minister of Justice and MHA for the district of Humber East, said he is pleased with the improvements slated for the district, specifically regarding the work to be carried out on the Steady Brook overpass. "The rehabilitation work on the approach grade to the overpass will make this area safer for the travelling public. The commitment to identify and improve roads throughout the province is a positive step in the strategy of long-term investment in road infrastructure throughout the province. This work in the district is another strong example of governments commitment to improve the safety on our provinces roads and highways."

Minister Rideout said, "This program has brought many benefits to our rural and urban districts in terms of making improvements to our roads and bridge infrastructure, providing for employment opportunities, as well as providing opportunities for local stakeholders and the construction industry as a whole. This is part of governments ongoing plan to rejuvenate Newfoundland and Labrador. Our government will do the right things to turn the province around."

Statistics Canada estimates that for every million dollars spent on road work, 12 direct and eight indirect jobs are created.
