Minister announces awarding of contract for road work in Humber Valley district

Tom Rideout, Minister of Transportation and Works, and Kathy Goudie, MHA for Humber Valley district, today announced a contract has been awarded for road work in the Humber Valley district under the 2004 Provincial Roads Improvement Program.

"The 2004-05 provincial budget allocated $30 million to the provincial roads program, an increase of $7 million over the previous year. Funding under this program provides for the maintenance and rehabilitation of the provinces bridges," said the minister. "To that end, I am pleased to announce that Brook Enterprises Incorporated of Corner Brook, has been awarded a contract valued at approximately $664,000 for the rehabilitation of the Birchy Narrows Bridge in the Humber Valley district."

"I am glad that this work will get underway very soon and this bridge will undergo much needed repairs. I am pleased to see Birchy Narrows Bridge in my district of Humber Valley placed as a provincial priority," said Ms. Goudie.

The award of these contracts represents over half a million dollars in road work. Statistics Canada estimates that for every million dollars spent on road work, 12 direct and eight indirect jobs are created.
