NOTE TO EDITORS:

Residents of Burgeo advised of caribou census beginning on February 23, 2004

The Science Division of the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation wishes to advise residents of the Burgeo area that the division will be conducting a census of the LaPoile caribou herd beginning on February 23. During this time, residents are advised that low level flying over the animals will occur and that a portion of caribou will be marked with a quick drying paint. This procedure does not harm the animals but greatly improves the reliability of the count. The work will take place between the areas of LaPoile Bay and White Bear Bay on the southwest coast near Burgeo, and northward along the Burgeo highway. The census is expected to take place for a period of two weeks.

For further information, please contact Rob Otto, Director of Science Division, (709) 637-2970.
