Department provides funding for new tourist accommodations on the Northern Peninsula

The Department of Innovation, Trade and Rural Development has approved $20,000 in equity funding for Burnt Cape Cabins tourist accommodations to be established in Raleigh on the Northen Peninsula. Made available through the departments Small Business Seed Capital Equity Program, the funding will support the creation of one permanent full-time and three permanent seasonal jobs.

"Due to the significant increase in tourism over the years, in part because of the Burnt Cape Ecological Reserve, there is a need for more accommodations in the Raleigh area," said Innovation, Trade and Rural Development Minister Kathy Dunderdale. "Burnt Cape Cabins will help meet that demand and, therefore, help keep visitors in the area longer which is good for the local economy. An increase in tourism will support an increase in economic growth for the region."

Burnt Cape Cabins will consist of two four-star cabins. The facility expects to open for the 2004 tourism season, which runs from May to October, and will target visitors to the Burnt Cape Ecological Reserve.

"Burnt Cape Cabins will not only create direct employment, but will support the growth of the tourism industry in the region and create economic spin-off benefits," said Trevor Taylor, MHA for The Straits-White Bay North.

The Small Business Seed Capital Equity Program makes equity contributions of up to $50,000 available on a matching basis to new entrepreneurs or existing small businesses seeking expansion opportunities in areas of the economy that offer significant growth potential.
