Duke of Edinburghs Award flag flies on Confederation Hill

Joan Burke, Minister of Human Resources, Labour and Employment (HRLE), led a flag-raising ceremony for the The Duke of Edinburghs Award Week on Confederation Hill in St. Johns. The flag will fly in front of Confederation Building in St. Johns for the remainder of Award Week, October 16 - October 22.

The Duke of Edinburghs Award is the most prestigious youth achievement award for young Canadians. The Newfoundland and Labrador Division of The Duke of Edinburghs Award has over 3,000 participants making it the Canadian division with the highest number of youth participating per capita. "I am honoured today to recognize a program that challenges our young people to develop their personal interests, and social and practical skills," said Minister Burke. "With their peers, youth take part in activities that encourage a spirit of adventure and discovery, self-reliance, teamwork and leadership skills. Government is committed to this extremely worthwhile program through the direct involvement of HRLE and by providing financial and staff support. We have a public, private, volunteer partnership in this province that has proven to be quite successful and is a model for other jurisdictions."

Other persons participating in the flag raising ceremony included Glen Mifflin, president of the Volunteer Provincial Council, Ashlee Forward a gold award participant in the program with the 25th St. Johns Rangers, Hayley Porter a bronze level participant at Bishops College and staff members Bill Wilson, executive director, Trudy OKeefe, assistant executive director, and Tony Manning, field officer.

Award Week will be marked by activities in other communities throughout the province.

The award program is open to all young people aged 14 - 25 years.
