Domestic wood cutting permits for Forest Management District 17
now available at Port Saunders forestry office

The Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods wishes to advise the general public that a Crown domestic cutting permit is now required to harvest fuelwood on Corner Brook Pulp and Paper limits in Forest Management District (FMD) 17. Permits are now available at the district forestry office located in Port Saunders.

On December 31, 2003 the Department of Forest Resources and Agrifoods and Corner Brook Pulp and Paper Limited signed an agreement which transferred the cutting rights for all hardwoods in FMD 17 to the Crown.

This agreement provides a mechanism to better manage the hardwood resource in FMD 17. Corner Brook Pulp and Paper does not currently use hardwoods to manufacture paper and, therefore have agreed to transfer this timber to the Crown to help support the provincial sawmill and value added hardwood industry. It is anticipated this new policy will increase current and future hardwood sawlog supplies for local industry.
