New President / CEO appointed for Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation

Loyola Sullivan, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board, today announced the appointment of Steve Winter as president and chief executive officer for the Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation (NLLC).

"Mr. Winter has worked for over 30 years in the packaged goods industry and brings a wealth of experience to his new position," said Minister Sullivan. "I look forward to working with him as I know the invaluable assets he brings from his business expertise and corporate knowledge will further strengthen the leadership team at the Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation."

Mr. Winter founded Terra Nova Brokers Ltd., and built the company to become the largest food brokerage in the province. He eventually acquired maritime food broker, Murray Spencer & Co. Ltd., which he merged with Terra Nova Brokers Ltd. to form Murray Spencer Atlantic Ltd. This company became the largest brokerage operation in the Atlantic region with 95 employees and sales in excess of $125 million. Mr. Winter sold the operation to Ontario-based, Thomas and Singer Inc, which later sold to Acosta Inc.. Prior to joining the Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation, Mr. Winter was senior vice-president, client management, with Acosta Canada, based in Ontario.

Minister Sullivan also announced today the appointment of Michael Monaghan, Q.C. of Corner Brook as vice-chair and Agnes Richard of Gander to the board of directors for the corporation. "With these appointments, the corporation now has the full complement for its board of directors. I am very pleased with the strong backgrounds and diverse experiences all members bring to the board, and I am confident they will provide solid direction for the corporation in the coming years," he said.

The Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation is a Crown agency of the Department of Finance. It is responsible for managing the importation, sale and distribution of beverage alcohol within the province.

Steve Winter
In 1977, Mr. Winter founded Terra Nova Brokers Ltd., and built the company to become the largest food brokerage in the province. In 1991, he acquired maritime food broker, Murray Spencer & Co. Ltd., which he merged with Terra Nova Brokers Ltd. five years later to form Murray Spencer Atlantic Ltd. By 1999, it was the largest brokerage operation in the Atlantic region with 95 employees and sales in excess of $125 million. That same year, Mr. Winter sold the operation to Ontario-based, Thomas and Singer Inc, which later sold to Acosta Inc. Prior to joining the Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation, Mr. Winter was senior vice-president, client management, with Acosta Canada.

In addition to his business experience, Mr. Winter has been involved in a number of industry and community organizations. He founded the Newfoundland Food Brokers Association and served as president for five years, served as president of the Canadian Food Brokers Association. He was a director with National Capital Commission and president of the Murray�s Pond Club. Mr. Winter has served as chairman for corporate fund-raising for the Newfoundland and Labrador Heart and Stroke Foundation, and as director with the Janeway Children�s Hospital Foundation and GIFT (Grocery Industry Foundation...Together) Atlantic. Currently, he is a member of the Advisory Board for the MUN School of Business.

Michael Monaghan, Q.C., Vice Chair
Corner Brook native Michael Monaghan, Q.C. has been a practicing lawyer and associate partner in the law firm Monaghan, Murphy and Watton for over 34 years. Mr. Monaghan is a member of the Law Society of Newfoundland and the Canadian Bar Association. He has served as director with Air Canada, Churchill Falls Labrador Corporation, and Gateway Cable Ltd., and has been involved with the Greater Corner Brook Board of Trade. At the community level, Mr. Monaghan was a member of the Rotary Club of Corner Brook, and served on the Western Memorial Hospital Corporation and the Victorian Order of Nurses.

Agnes M. Richard
Upon retiring after 30 years in the teaching profession, Ms. Richard embarked on a second career. She achieved the professional retirement planner designation from the Canadian Association of Retirement Planners and co-founded Ragon Communications, where she serves a facilitator of retirement planning seminars. Ms. Richard also has an extensive background in community involvement serving in a variety of capacities with a number of local, provincial and national organizations, including: Golden Legion Manor Seniors� Complex, Canadian Heritage, Newfoundland Public Libraries Board, Canadian Library Trustees Association, Canadian Heart Foundation, Newfoundland and Labrador Teachers� Association, Canadian Advisory Council on the Status of Women, and Women�s Institutes of Newfoundland and Labrador.
