Northeast Avalon Steering Committee releases reports The Northeast Avalon Region of
the Rural Secretariat recently released two regional profiles: A Strategy
for Early Childhood Development in the Northeast Avalon Region and Poverty
Profile of the Northeast Avalon Region.
"We are very pleased to be
able to provide detailed information on our region, right down to the
neighbourhood level. These reports enable us to work with community partners
to address priorities, particularly relating to issues of children and
poverty in our communities," said Gail Gosse, committee chair. "We
strongly believe that knowledge is power, and by better understanding our
region we can better address the issues collectively."
The steering committee,
comprising stakeholders from numerous sectors, including health, education,
and economic development, have long recognized that there is a great deal of
disparity in the Northeast Avalon region. Looking at overall regional data,
it appears the Northeast Avalon is quite prosperous. There are, however, a
number of communities and neighbourhoods that do not share in this
prosperity, and it is only through more detailed analysis that factors such
as income and employment levels become more evident. "From the
information we have compiled over the last year, the partners are now
well-positioned to identify areas of greatest need and develop action
plans," Ms. Gosse reports.
The committee also recognizes
the importance of prevention and early intervention. Research consistently
shows that small investments made during the early childhood years result in
long-term significant benefits for the overall community.
"I commend the Northeast
Avalon Region Steering Committee for its approach to using evidence and
working collaboratively to address concerns," says Kathy Dunderdale,
minister responsible for the Rural Secretariat. "Certainly, the issues
of social and economic development are complex in this region and in the
province, but through joint efforts we will be able to make changes that
will benefit us all in the long term."
