Improving Federal-provincial Relations

One of governments priorities for the province over the coming year is to improve federal-provincial relations in concrete ways that bring real benefits to the people, economy and treasury of Newfoundland and Labrador.

To achieve this, Budget 2004 allocates $350,000 for a Newfoundland and Labrador Office of Federal-Provincial Relations in Ottawa.

Premier Danny Williams says this office will give Newfoundland and Labrador a stronger, more assertive, more effective presence in the nations capital and help the province achieve its full potential within the Canadian federation.

"The Newfoundland and Labrador Office of Federal-Provincial Relations will be instrumental in representing the province on issues of vital concern to the province. It will play a key role in focusing attention on such issues as equalization, health and social transfers, oil and gas revenues, Canadas share in Hibernia, fisheries management, infrastructure, Churchill Falls, military training at 5-Wing Goose Bay and other issues that affect the people and economy of the province," the Premier said.

Premier Williams said the office will augment the ongoing work of the Intergovernmental Affairs Secretariat by providing strong, effective representation of Newfoundland and Labradors concerns in the nations capital.

"The Office of Federal-Provincial Relations will also enable the province to better deliver important information to senior decision-makers in the federal government, not only on how our governments can work togther to address Newfoundland and Labradors challenges, but also on the numerous opportunities and expanding potential in this province which, if properly nurtured and developed, will enable Newfoundland and Labrador to achieve greater self-sufficiency," Premier Williams said.
