Environmental Assessment Bulletin

Environment and Conservation Minister Tom Osborne has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act. 

UNDERTAKING REGISTERED: 

Fortune All-Terrain-Vehicle (ATV) Trail                                                    (Reg.1166)
Proponent: Fortune Recreation Trail Association (Mr. Jerry Wells)

The proponent proposes to construct an approximately 12 kilometre All-Terrain-Vehicle (ATV) trail to access a remote cottage at North West Pond near Fortune, on the Burin Peninsula. The trail is proposed to be three to four metres wide. Construction is planned to commence as soon as all permits are in place. An excavator will be used to develop the trail to a distance of one kilometre. Construction of the remaining 11 kilometres will be by hand tools and chain saws. The undertaking was registered on December 3, 2004; public comments are due by January 7, 2005; and the minister's decision is due by January 17, 2005. 

The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown.

PLANS ACCEPTED: 

Argentia Hydrometallurgical Demonstration Plant                                        (Reg. 1040)
Proponent: Voisey�s Bay Nickel Company Limited

 Environmental Monitoring/Follow-Up Plan Accepted

The minister has determined that the Environmental Monitoring/Follow-Up Plan (dated November 2004) is acceptable. The plan was required as one of the conditions of release for the project from the provincial Environmental Assessment Process.

Human Resources Plan Accepted

The minister has determined that the Human Resources Plan (dated July 2004) and associated Women�s Employment Plan, for the construction and operation of the plant, is acceptable. The plan was required as one of the conditions of release for the project from the provincial Environmental Assessment Process.
