Hunting season for big game officially opens

Environment and Conservation Minister Tom Osborne today advised the public that the hunting season for big game begins this weekend in many parts of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Most big game hunting seasons throughout the province will open on Saturday, September 11, while small game, waterfowl hunting and trapping seasons begin in a few weeks. The big game season for other areas of the province will open on October 2.

Detailed information on this years hunting seasons and bag limits can be found in the 2004-05 Hunting and Trapping Guide available at various government offices, including the Department of Natural Resources and Inland Fish and Wildlife Division offices. The guide is also available on the Newfoundland and Labrador government Web site //www.gov.nl.ca/env/wildlife/publications/2004huntguide.pdf

"Our province is truly a wonderful place to enjoy outdoor activities like hunting and trapping," said Minister Osborne. "I encourage all hunters and trappers to be responsible in their activities and to keep safety in mind at all times. Hunters and trappers are key to helping us understand how to best conserve and manage our precious wildlife resources. Their participation in responsible hunting and trapping contributes significantly to the overall success of our wildlife programs."

Minister Osborne wished all hunters and trappers a safe and enjoyable season.
