Government launches chip seal experiment on Trans Labrador Highway

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador has decided to apply chip seal on two sections of the Trans Labrador Highway between Wabush and Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Premier Roger Grimes made this announcement today in conjunction with Works, Services and Transportation Minister Jim Walsh and Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs Minister Wally Andersen.

Approximately seven kilometres of chip seal will be placed on the Trans Labrador Highway just outside of Happy Valley-Goose Bay and approximately eight kilometres on the highway east of Wabush. This project is being tested on a trial basis in order to determine its suitability to the highway and performance in this climate.

The primary advantage of chip seal is that it provides a protective coating to road surfaces, increasing its durability and skid resistance. An additional benefit of using chip seal is that it will reduce dust on the road.

"This project is part of the Government of Newfoundland and Labradors ongoing commitment to improve Labradors transportation infrastructure," said Premier Grimes. "I am pleased to see work continue with the Trans Labrador Highway to ensure a better highway for the transport of people and goods across Labrador."

"Government is anxious to get this initiative underway," said Minister Walsh. "Tenders for the application of the chip seal will be called this week. I sincerely hope that this experiment will be successful in providing motorists with an improved driving surface."

"This is wonderful news for the people of Labrador," said Minister Andersen. "I am pleased that government is honouring its commitment to improve driving conditions along the Trans Labrador Highway."
