School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador Holding Girls 2a, 4a and
Fair Play Volleyball Tournaments this weekend

The first provincial high school volleyball championships of the year start off this coming weekend. An exciting addition to this years event is the inaugural Fair Play tournament. Girls teams from throughout the province will compete for the 2A, 4A and Fair Play championships.

Belanger Memorial in Doyles is the host school for the Girls 2A Championships. A total of nine teams will play a two division format to determine the playoff teams. Division A will feature Eric G. Lambert School from Churchill Falls, Lakeside Academy from Buchans, Random Island Academy and Our Lady of Labrador High from West St. Modeste. Division B will see action from Lumsden School, St. Josephs Academy (Lamaline), Belanger Memorial, Cloud River Academy (Roddickton) and St. Peters Academy (Westport). Games start at 9 a.m. Friday and continue throughout the day. The last four round-robin matches will go ahead starting 9 a.m, Saturday. Following the round-robin, the top two teams from each division will meet in the semi-finals with the winners advancing to the championship game.

Holy Spirit High (Manuels) and Queen Elizabeth High (Foxtrap) are the co-hosting schools for the 4A Girls Volleyball championships. Ten teams will compete for the prestigious championship banner. Facing off in Division A will be Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts), Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor), Queen Elizabeth High, Regina High (Corner Brook) and Stephenville High. Division B will see action from Clarenville High, Herdman Collegiate (Corner Brook), Holy Spirit High (Manuels), Prince of Wales Collegiate (St. Johns) and Roncalli High (Avondale). Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. at Holy Spirit High, with matches starting at 1 p.m. At both the Holy Spirit and Queen Elizabeth High venues. Round-robin action continues throughout Friday and finishes Saturday morning. The top teams from each division will advance to the semi-finals Saturday afternoon. The semi-finals are followed by the bronze and gold medal games.

Gill Memorial in Musgrave Harbour is the host school for the first ever Fair Play Girls Provincial Volleyball tournament. Teams had to declare their intent to play Fair Play and advance through the qualification tournament process to compete at the provincial level. This tournament is an excellent opportunity for schools, especially the larger ones, to enter two teams in high school competition. No player is permitted to play in both the Fair Play and the divisional championship so it provides opportunities for more students to become involved. The teams involved in this historic tournament include Bishop White All Grade (Port Rexton), Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor), Regina High (Corner Brook), Mountain Field Academy (Forteau), St. Marks High (Kings Cove) and the host, Gill Memorial. The tournament is set up in a round-robin format with games starting 10 a.m., Friday and continuing throughout the day. The play continues Saturday with the remaining round-robin games, followed by the semi-finals involving 1st vs 4th and 2nd vs 3rd. The winner of these two playoff games face off in the championship game.

In its continuing effort to emphasize sportsmanship, School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador, in conjunction with Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador has expanded its Sportsmanship First Program. In addition to the Team Sportsmanship Award, each team will nominate an individual player to receive an individual sportsmanship medal.

The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals, while the winner of the championship game will also receive the coveted championship banner. All the School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
