The following is being distributed at the request of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador holding Island Girls 3a and
Boys 3a volleyball tournaments this weekend

Two high school volleyball tournaments will be played this weekend to determine the island representative to the provincial tournament in Labrador in December.

Glovertown Academy and Smallwood Academy in Gambo are co-hosting the Island 3A Girls volleyball tournament. Eight teams will compete in a two-division round robin format. Division A will be played at Glovertown and will consist of Glovertown Academy, Pasadena Academy, Grandys River Collegiate and King Academy (Harbour Breton). Playing out of Gambo, in Division 2 will be the co-host Smallwood Academy, Piccadilly Central High, Elwood High (Deer Lake) and Roncalli Central High (Port Saunders). The opening ceremonies is set for 9:30 Friday morning at Glovertown Academy, with games starting at 11 a.m at both venues. All round robin games will be played Friday. The top two teams from each division will advance to the cross-overs on Saturday. Semi-finals start at 9 a.m. followed by a bronze medal game and championship game. All Saturday games will be played at Smallwood Academy in Gambo.

Roncalli Central High in Port Saunders will host the 10 teams vying for the Boys 3A Island Championship. Games in Group A will take place at Roncalli High, while St. Theresa �s Elementary will accommodate games for Group B. Competing in Group A will be Lester Pearson Memorial (Wesleyville), St. James Regional High (Port aux Basques), Baccalieu Collegiate (Old Perlican), Bay d�Espoir Academy and Roncalli Central High. Playing in Group B will be Viking Trail Academy (Plum Point), Baie Verte High, J. M. Olds Collegiate (Twillingate), Southwest Arm Academy and Piccadilly High. Games in both divisions get underway Friday morning at 9:30. The semi-final games are scheduled for 9 and 10:30 a.m. Saturday followed by the 12 noon championship game. All Saturday games are scheduled for Roncalli High.

The provincial boys and girls volleyball tournament is being hosted by Mealy Mountain High in Happy Valley-Goose Bay on December 5 and 6. The winners of this weekend�s tournament will advance to the provincial in Labrador, where they will compete against the 3A schools in Labrador for the overall provincial title.

The top teams will be rewarded with gold and silver medals. All the School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
