The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

Provincial high school boys basketball championships scheduled this weekend

The High School Athletic Federation�s basketball season comes to a close this coming weekend as provincial boys basketball champions will be determined in three divisions.

The boys 2A title will be decided at Lakewood Academy in Glenwood. Eight teams have qualified for this event and will play a two-division round robin format. Division A will consist of the host, Lakewood Academy, Christ the King School (Rushoon), Main River Academy (Sop�s Arm) and St. Mary�s All Grade (Mary�s Harbour). Competing in Division B will be A.R. Scammell (Change Islands), Bonne Bay Academy (Woody Point), Bishop White All Grade (Port Rexton) and Menihek High (Labrador City).

Games will be played at both Lakewood Academy and St. Pauls Intermediate School in Gander and will get underway 3:00 p.m. on Thursday. The opening ceremonies take place at 6:30 p.m., followed by the final two games of the day. The round robin schedule continues throughout Friday, starting at 9:00 a.m. The crossover games are scheduled for 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on Saturday morning, followed by a 2:00 p.m. championship game.

Riverwood Academy in Wing�s Point is the host school for the eight team 3A boys basketball tournament. Playing in Division 1 will be St. Catherine�s Academy (Salmonier), Viking Trail Academy (Plum Point), Gander Collegiate and Leo Burke Academy (Bishop Falls). Vying for top honors in Division 2 will be the host, Riverwood, St. Lawrence Academy, Baltimore High (Ferryland) and Piccadilly High. The tournament gets underway 1:45 p.m. Thursday with the start of round robin play. The opening ceremonies are set for 5:15 p.m. Thursday. The remaining round robin games will be played at both Riverwood Academy and Carmanville School, starting 9:00 a.m. Friday. The top two teams from each division will meet in the crossovers at 9:00 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. Saturday. The championship game is set for 2:00 p.m. Saturday.

Stella Maris High in Trepassey will host the 4A boys basketball tournament. Eight teams will be competing for the provincial crown. The Gold Division will consist of O�Donel High (Mount Pearl), Herdman Collegiate (Corner Brook), Carbonear Collegiate and the host, Stella Maris. The Blue Division will see action from Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor), Fatima Academy (St. Bride�s), Prince of Wales Collegiate (St. John�s) and Booth Memorial (St. John�s).

Round robin games get underway Thursday at 10:30 a.m. and will continue throughout Thursday and Friday. The opening ceremonies will take place 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. The top two teams from each division will meet in the semi-finals, scheduled for 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon on Saturday. The championship game will be played at 4:00 p.m. Saturday.

All teams involved will be competing for gold and silver medals and the championship banner. Individual sportsmanship awards will also be presented for each tournament, sponsored by Crime Stoppers of Newfoundland and Labrador.

All the Federation�s tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
