The following is being distributed at the request of the Newfoundland and Labrador High School Athletic Federation:

Provincial high school girls 3a and 4a basketball tournaments
scheduled for this weekend

The first two of six high school basketball champions will be decided this weekend as teams take to the courts in Deer Lake and St. Mary�s. A total of 16 teams will be vying for championship and sportsmanship banners.

Elwood High in Deer Lake is the host school for the Girls 4A tournament. The hotly contested event will feature eight teams in a two division format. Seeing action in the Red Division will be the host, Elwood High, Laval High (Placentia), Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor), and Holy Heart of Mary (St. John�s). The Blue Division will feature defending champion, St. Kevin�s (Goulds), Roncalli High (Avondale), Gonzaga High (St. John�s) and Herdman Collegiate (Corner Brook).

Games get underway Thursday at 10 a.m. at both the Elwood and Xavier School gyms. The opening ceremonies are planned for 1:45 followed by the continuation of the round robin schedule. The remaining five round robin games are scheduled for Friday at Elwood. The top two teams from each division will advance to playoff action Saturday morning at 9:30 and 11:30. The championship game is scheduled for 3:15.

The 3A Girls Basketball Championships are taking place in St. Mary�s, hosted by Dunne Memorial Academy. Eight teams will be featured in this tournament, as well. The Red Division will see action from the host, Dunne Memorial, Fatima Academy (St. Brides), Viking Trail Academy (Plum Point) and Leo Burke Academy (Bishop�s Falls). Competing in the Blue Division will be St. Lawrence Academy, St. Catherines High (Salmonier), Fogo Island Central High and Menihek High (Labrador City).

Round robin games will be played on Thursday starting at 10:15 a.m. and Friday starting at 9 a.m.. The top two teams from each division will meet in the cross over games at 9 and 10:45, Saturday with the winners of those games playing at 2 p.m. in the championship game.

All teams involved will be competing for gold and silver medals and the championship banner. . Individual sportsmanship awards will also be presented for each tournament, sponsored by Crime Stoppers of Newfoundland and Labrador

All the federation�s tournaments are sponsored by School Milk Foundation/Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador and Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador.
