Another banner year for provincial parks

Julie Bettney, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, announced today the success of the 2003 camping season in our provincial parks. Registered camping units increased approximately 13 per cent over last season, resulting in a two-year consecutive increase of 29 per cent since the 2001 season.

"This has been a very successful season for our provincial parks system," said Minister Bettney. "Our natural beauty and pristine environment are all essential elements of our tourism product. It is our responsibility to protect our natural environment and contribute toward its sustainability. The overseeing of our parks system is one way we live up to this responsibility."

The minister also provided an update on the closing dates for the provincial parks. Eleven camping parks will be open for camping until September 15. These parks include: Barachois Pond; Butter Pot; J T Cheeseman; Dildo Run; Frenchmans Cove; LaManche; Lockston Path; Notre Dame; Pinware River; Pistolet Bay; and Sandbanks.

Chance Cove Park will remain open to campers until October 6 and Cape St. Marys Ecological Reserve will remain open to visitors until October 13.

Although all of the provinces parks will soon close for the season for camping, unmotorized access will continue to be permitted. Park users are reminded that they may continue to enjoy activities such as hiking, bicycling on park roads, bird watching, and the like.

Groomed cross-country ski trails will be available in Butter Pot this coming winter. Furthermore, winter camping is also available at Butter Pot and Notre Dame this winter season.
