Wilderness reserves user permits provide valuable information

Julie Bettney, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, announced that 173 user permits were issued for the wilderness reserves in 2002-03. There are two reserves in Newfoundland and Labrador, the Avalon and Bay Du Nord.

"It is important for us to have information that guides wildlife management, conservation and natural areas protection," said Minister Bettney. "By obtaining permits, the public provides the Parks and Natural Areas Division with this important management information. We recognize the need to protect our natural resources whether they be wildlife, green spaces, parks or wilderness areas, and information is integral to ensuring this protection."

User permits for wilderness reserves are mandatory and free of charge. Entry permits for wilderness reserves can be obtained by contacting individuals listed in Table 2 below. A condition of the entry permit is that users return a brief summary of their wilderness reserve trip to Parks and Naturals Areas Division headquarters in Deer Lake. The Parks and Natural Areas Division of the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation is the managing agency for Wilderness and Ecological Reserves in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The general public is reminded that the use of motorized vehicles such as all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) are prohibited within a wilderness reserve by the Wilderness and Ecological Reserves Act (1980). Snowmobiling is permitted within the Bay du Nord Wilderness Reserve, except within the winter range of the Middle Ridge caribou herd. Snowmobiling is not permitted within the Avalon Wilderness Reserve. Hunting, fishing, hiking and canoeing are permitted in both reserves.

For further information on activities permitted within wilderness reserves, please consult the wilderness reserve users guide that is available from the Parks and Naturals Areas Division headquarters in Deer Lake (709-635-4520).
