Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve seasonal opening

Julie Bettney, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that the Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve and Interpretation Center is officially open to the public. It will remain open until October 13, 2003.

Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve is an internationally significant seabird colony and is the largest gannet colony in Newfoundland & Labrador and the second largest one in North America. It is also the most accessible seabird colony in North America. The interpretation center is open to the public daily, seven days a week, and staff are available on site to provide information to visitors and to offer guided educational programs.

"All the seabirds have returned to nest at this magnificent reserve. I encourage everyone to visit Cape St. Mary's this season and enjoy the various services offered at the location," said Minister Bettney.

The Provincial Parks and Natural Areas Reservation Line is once again operational. Individuals can call 1-877-214-2267 (CAMP) to make camping reservations in Provincial Parks. Also, the public can now access the updated Parks and Natural Areas website at www.gov.nl.ca/parks&reserves

"Cape St. Marys is truly one of our provinces natural wonders," said Minister Bettney. "It is a classic example of our unique, diverse and breathtaking natural grandeur, and I encourage everyone to take the opportunity to explore it."
