Funding for Science Division increased

Budget 2003 adds $1 million for the Science Division of the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. This fulfills the commitment made in last years Throne Speech to increase governments funding for science to $2.8 million annually in 2003-04.

"Government continues its commitment to protect and conserve our natural heritage by providing this funding to ensure that our wildlife resource is managed responsibly," said Julie Bettney, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. "This resource is an important part of our culture and it is necessary that we all understand how and why animal populations change over time. We began that process when the Science Division was established in August 2001."

The Science Division complements the work of the Inland Fish and Wildlife Division and the Parks and Recreation Division by providing these divisions with the necessary scientific research to develop management plans. It initiates and fosters best practices in programs of research and scientific inquiry, as well as the enhancement of this province as a leader in science-based management and sustainment of resources. The division works with all levels of government, with academia, and non-governmental organizations in North America and internationally to implement a program of research in our province to maximize the benefits, and enhance and increase the relevance of educational programs of our wildlife and natural areas.

"The need to protect our natural resources, whether they be wildlife, green spaces, park areas or wilderness areas, is becoming more important," said Minister Bettney. "One of the major drawing factors for tourists to this province is our pristine environment. The Science Division is an innovative and comprehensive approach to improve conservation of the natural resources and areas of Newfoundland and Labrador."
