Province announces funding for Mealy Mountain Collegiate Auditorium

Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs Minister Wally Andersen and Municipal and Provincial Affairs Minister Oliver Langdon announced today funding has been allocated to build a new 350-seat auditorium for Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

The $3 million facility will become part of the new Mealy Mountain Collegiate. The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador will contribute $2.4 million, or 80 per cent, towards the cost. The funding is being provided under the Municipal Capital Works Program.

"I am delighted to make this announcement today, less than six months after government was approached to provide the funding," said Minister Andersen. "Government has been committed to this project since day one and, as minister, I am pleased to have played a role in making it become a reality. This new facility will provide a venue for the performing arts, not only for Happy Valley-Goose Bay, but for all of Labrador. You only have to look at the faces of children from my district of Torngat Mountains after theyve returned from a festival in Happy Valley-Goose Bay to know the importance of such a facility."

Governments contribution is consistent with other Municipal Capital Works projects announced in the province, noted Minister Langdon. "We are pleased to be able to provide this funding for such a worthwhile project, as was the case when we announced other strategic municipal infrastructure projects earlier this year," he said. "This project will certainly be a great benefit to the region."
