New technology used in the treatment of cancer unveiled at the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre

Today, Gerald Smith, Minister of Health and Community Services, joined representatives from the Give to Feel Good Campaign and The Power of Life Project to unveil the provinces first CT Simulatorleading edge technology used in the treatment of cancer at the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre.

The CT Simulator was purchased through a generous gift from the Power of Life Project to the Give to Feel Good Campaign. Newfoundland Power, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Canadian Cancer Society-Newfoundland and Labrador Division and the Newfoundland Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation (NCTRF) launched this project last year, in an effort to promote cancer awareness and education.

"The CT Simulator joins a long list of equipment and technology purchased through generous donations to this campaign and the support of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. To date, more than $16 million in equipment has been purchased," said Vic Young, chair, Give to Feel Good Campaign.

The provincial government has committed an unprecedented 2:1 matching gift program for all donations to the Give to Feel Good Campaign. "In Healthier Together, our provinces strategic health plan, we recognize that the quality, accessibility and sustainability of the health and community services system must be improved. Providing up-to-date diagnostic equipment such as the CT Simulator is a key part of achieving this goal," said Minister Gerald Smith. "Government is pleased to be a partner in the Power of Life Project. These kinds of partnerships are vital to improving the overall health of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians."

This would not be possible without the tremendous support of organizations like The Power of Life Project and the partners within. Mr. Philip G. Hughes, president and CEO of Newfoundland Power thanked the partners and supporters of this new initiative, noting, "It is very rewarding to see the significant contribution that The Power of Life Project is making to the people of the province. This CT Simulator represents approximately $600,000 of our overall goal to raise more than $1 million. As we celebrate the unveiling of this state-of-the-art technology that will be used in the treatment of cancer, the need to continue investing our time, energy and resources into The Power of Life Project still exists. The employees of Newfoundland Power remain committed, and I know that together with the continued support of our customers and the province as a whole, we can make a difference."

The CT Simulator is state-of-the-art and according to Dr. P. K. Ganguly, Director of Radiation Oncology, NCTRF, "This technology increases the precision of radiation therapy by constructing a three-dimensional image of the area to be treated. With more precision we have a better view of the patients tumor, increasing accuracy and reducing the risk of harming healthy tissue."

This is another significant milestone for the Give to Feel Good Campaign. We are pleased to report that the campaign has raised in excess of $9.5 million towards its $10 million goal.
