Silviculture funding announced for Labrador West

Forest Resources and Agrifoods Minister Rick Woodford has announced funding in the amount of $32,350 for a silviculture project in the district of Labrador West. Funding for the project is being provided through the Provincial Silviculture Program.

Mr. Woodford says silviculture projects ongoing throughout Newfoundland and Labrador play a vital role in sustaining a future wood supply for the province. "The planting of tree seedlings here and throughout other parts of the province continues to demonstrate governments commitment to responsible forest management," said Minister Woodford. "In addition, the Provincial Silviculture Program creates meaningful employment opportunities for many individuals in rural communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador."

Project activity is taking place in the area of Long Lake and will involve the planting of 137,500 black spruce tree seedlings over an area of approximately 50 hectares. The tree seedlings are being supplied through the departments Goose Bay Nursery.

The project, which is scheduled to commence August 21, will provide 14 person-weeks of employment.
