Finance Minister to meet with Atlantic counterparts

Finance Minister Loyola Sullivan will be in Halifax, Nova Scotia on Friday, November 14 to meet with finance ministers from the other Atlantic provinces.

"I look forward very much to meeting with my Atlantic counterparts and discussing regional issues of mutual concern, including the renewal of the equalization program in 2004," Minister Sullivan said. "This program needs to be strengthened, but to date the federal government has not acted on frequent requests from provinces to do that."

On a related issue, the ministers will also discuss the impact of the 2001 census on Atlantic Canada, particularly its impact on equalization payments.

The federal commitment to provide up to an additional $2 billion for health care subject to a federal budget surplus will be among other items to be discussed, Minister Sullivan said.
