Government House Leader comments on Budget debate

Government House Leader, and Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs Tom Lush said some interesting points emerged in the budget debate in the House of Assembly, demonstrating the inconsistencies of the Opposition on significant issues facing Newfoundland and Labrador.

Minister Lush said, "Government MHAs who participated in the debate this week highlighted the inconsistencies of the Opposition and its leader. It is important for the people of this province to understand that Mr. Williams has not produced any plan for the future and has not articulated what the Opposition stands for."

Minister Lush pointed out that this governments continued use of strategic planning to guide and direct programs and policies is seeing results. Clearly, this was demonstrated in the solid plan for Newfoundland and Labrador presented in the Throne Speech and the Budget.

The minister said. "Our members must continue to question the Opposition about the inconsistencies shown on positions they have taken on small business, the Mineral Tax Act, the location of a second MRI in the province, and other issues like education, health care and the fishery. There are still many questions that remain unanswered, and the people of the province deserve answers."

Minister Lush said, "To date, this session of the House is proving to be very productive. The debate on the budget will continue next week, and I offer my assurance that the government is working hard for the future prosperity of Newfoundland and Labrador."
