Environmental Assessment Bulletin
Environment Minister Bob Mercer has announced the following events relative to Part 10 Environmental Assessment of the Environmental Protection Act.
The proponent intends to construct a mink farm on 48.3 hectares of land (former Cook Dairy Farm Property) at the northeastern end of Windsor Heights (St. Johns & Portugal Cove-St. Phillips) which is within the boundaries of an Agricultural Designated Area (ADA). There will be six fully enclosed 12 metre by 60 metre mink sheds, housing approximately 2,000 to 6,000 females, and a 15 metre by 30 metre building for the preparation of feedstuffs. Manure and bedding will be removed from the buildings at appropriate intervals for application as fertilizer to cleared sections of the site. Intact carcasses will be shipped from the province in temperature controlled vehicles for skinning. The undertaking was registered on October 2, 2003; public comments are due by November 6, 2003; and the ministers decision is due on November 16, 2003.
The minister encourages all interested parties to become involved and to make comments known. Comments on submitted documents are invited from the public, addressed in writing to the minister, and are welcome prior to the deadline date shown.
