"No Fees, No Fines" Vehicle Emissions Clinics scheduled

Environment Minister Bob Mercer will officially launch the "No Fees, No Fines" Vehicle Emissions Clinics in Corner Brook on August 12. The vehicle emissions clinics are sponsored by the provincial Department of Environment, Environment Canada and the Newfoundland and Labrador Lung Association.

The clinic is a free service for motorists and provides them with an opportunity to have the pollution control equipment on their vehicles inspected and tested.

"The "No Fees, No Fines" Vehicle Emissions Clinic is a great way for people to learn if their vehicles are operating efficiently while at the same time controlling air pollution," said Minister Mercer. "I encourage the general public to take advantage of the opportunity to have a free evaluation of their vehicle when the clinic is in their area."

The first Vehicle Emissions Clinic will be held in Corner Brook on August 12 at the Wal-Mart parking lot . Other clinics will be held at the Stephenville Mall parking lot on August 13, at the Exploits Valley Mall parking lot in Grand Falls-Windsor on August 14, and at the Gander Mall parking lot on August 15. The clinics run from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

At the clinic, a number of assessments and tests are performed on cars including an assessment of the levels of pollutants in the tailpipe exhaust, a fuel cap pressure test, tire pressure assessments, and an under-hood inspection. Based on the results, the driver will be given a pass or fail report on the vehicle. For vehicles which fail the inspection, motorists will be given suggestions or recommendations for improvement.

"The Lung Association is proud to be a partner in the Vehicle Emissions Clinics in Newfoundland and Labrador,"said Peggy Johnson, executive director, Newfoundland and Labrador Lung Association. "The clinics are very important as they help to identify actions we can take to improve air quality and protect the air we all breathe."

"Personal actions for environmental improvements at the local level are the best way for Canadians to understand their role in cleaning the air and making their communities healthier places to live," said David Anderson, federal Minister of the Environment. "Our government has made achieving cleaner air and reducing climate change priorities for action and to helping Canadians across this country do their part."

"No Fees, No Fines" Vehicle Emissions Clinics have been held throughout Newfoundland and Labrador since 1989.
