Minister congratulates recipients of Prime Minister�s Awards for Teaching Excellence

Education Minister Gerry Reid today congratulated the recipients of this year�s Prime Minister�s Awards for Excellence in Teaching. The recipients were recently announced in Ottawa, in conjunction with the new Prime Minister�s Awards for Excellence in Early Childhood Education.

"Our teachers provide an invaluable service to the community as a whole, as they are responsible for developing and shaping our children and preparing them to be the future leaders of this province," said Minister Reid. "There is no doubt that in Newfoundland and Labrador we have some of the best, most capable teachers in the country. The seven recipients this year embody the characteristics of excellence in teaching, and I extend to them sincere congratulations on behalf of all Newfoundlanders and Labradorians."

The is the 10th anniversary of the Prime Minister�s Awards for Excellence in Teaching, and the first year of the Prime Minister�s Awards for Excellence in Early Childhood Education. Each year, educators from across the country are recognized by these awards which honour teachers at the national level with Certificates of Excellence and at the local level with Certificates of Achievement. The awards recognize the efforts of outstanding teachers in all disciplines.

This year�s winners from Newfoundland and Labrador were: Lucy Warren, Coaker Academy, Summerford; Margo Conners, Holy Heart of Mary High School, St. John�s; Vincenza Etchegary, St. Bonaventure�s College, St. John�s; Donna Harvey, Lewisporte Collegiate, Lewisporte; Claire Rice, Holy Heart of Mary High School, St. John�s; Robert Riche, Bishops College, St. John�s; and Bruce Stagg, Clarenville High School, Clarenville. All received Certificates of Achievement.

Education stakeholders from across Canada make up national and regional selection committees, who identify candidates who have achieved outstanding results with students, with recognized skills in the following areas: innovative and exemplary teaching practices; student skills development; student interest and participation; student achievement and performance; teacher commitment and leadership.

All recipients receive a certificate and pin, along with a letter from the Prime Minister. Recipients� schools receive cash awards to be used for educational purposes and a certificate recognizing their support and contribution to the teachers� achievement.
