Government commits $5 million to federal-provincial Broadband project
through the Centre for Distance Learning and Innovation

Over the next two years, government will contribute $5 million towards a federal-provincial Broadband project in the province, with $2.5 million in funding being allocated in Budget 2003.

"I am pleased that the province will contribute $5 million to a federal-provincial Broadband infrastructure program in the province, through the Centre for Distance Learning and Innovation," said Gerry Reid, Minister of Education. "This will enable the expansion of Broadband access to additional schools and communities around the province so that eventually all learners, no matter where they live, will have access to high speed, reliable Internet connectivity. It will also help establish Newfoundland and Labrador as an acknowledged leader in distance education in Canada.

"The Internet is a valuable tool which should be readily accessible to each and every person in the province, as it opens a world of valuable learning opportunities. We are also hopeful that this commitment of funding will garner support and additional funding from private sector partners."
