Sportsmanship First Program

On Wednesday, February 13, at ODonel High School in Mount Pearl, the Newfoundland Labrador High School Athletic Federation will officially launch its Sportsmanship First Program. Since its inception in 1969, sportsmanship has been very important to all those involved in high school sports. It continues to be what high school athletes, coaches and organizers strive towards. The federation is very pleased that Crime Stoppers Newfoundland and Labrador have partnered with us in this very important program.

The celebration of sportsmanship at ODonel will get under way at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Representatives from all 14 St. Johns region high schools will march into the gym, symbolizing their schools commitment to sportsmanship.

In addition to athletes, coaches and fans involved in high school athletics, on hand for this event as well will be federation president, Mike Sutton, Marlene Jesso, representing Crime Stoppers and other school and community leaders.

The Sportsmanship First Program has many components that together will promote sportsmanship and recognize those individuals and schools who exemplify the true spirit of sportsmanship. Each school will receive a personalized banner and a poster series to display in their gym. The banner and posters will be unveiled at the official kickoff. Other aspects of the program include a banner for Team Sportsmanship Award at provincial tournaments, a special School Sportsmanship Medal for each member school to present locally, and promotional materials.

Mike Sutton, federation president, and organizer for the ODonel event is very excited about the program. "This is what high school sports should be all about. We want to let everyone know that sportsmanship is alive and growing in high school sports."
