NLIS 3 November 27, 2002 (Tourism, Culture and Recreation) Appointments to the Wilderness and Ecological Reserves Advisory Council Julie Bettney, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, is pleased to announce recent appointments to the Wilderness and Ecological Reserves Advisory Council (WERAC). The advisory council is appointed by cabinet under the Wilderness and Ecological Reserves Act for the purpose of advising cabinet on the establishment of wilderness and ecological reserves. The council plays a key role in providing advice on the protection of the province�s most outstanding natural areas. WERAC works closely with the Parks and Natural Areas Division, Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, to advance the province�s protected areas agenda. There are 11 positions on council. Membership generally reflects all regions of the province and consists of individuals with a variety of backgrounds. Four new members, William Kelly of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Graham Wood of Fortune, Phyllis Baird of St. Andrews, and Father John McCarthy of St. John�s joined the council in October. "Each of these four individuals brings a great deal of knowledge and experience to WERAC," said Minister Bettney. "I am very pleased with these appointments. I look forward to working with them as we move forward in achieving our collective goal, protecting our province�s natural areas." Also on the council are Jennifer Caines of Pool�s Cove, Dr. Luise Hermanutz of Portugal Cove, Laura Jackson of St. John�s, Dr. Bill Montevecchi of Portugal Cove, Earl Pilgrim of Roddickton and Tony Ryan of Port Saunders.
