NLIS 4 November 7, 2002 (Tourism, Culture and Recreation) Minister and industry congratulate provincial Gemini winners Julie Bettney, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, in conjunction with the Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Corporation, today congratulated the recent Gemini winners from our province. Local film industry representatives received 15 nominations and were awarded the following Geminis:
"The film industry in Newfoundland and Labrador is a very important venue through which we share our rich and diverse culture with the rest of the world. I congratulate all Gemini nominees and award winners from our province, and I look forward to future projects which display the film industry�s commitment to preserving and promoting our culture and heritage through this medium," said Minister Bettney. The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television and CBC Television presented the17th Annual Gemini Awards, which celebrated excellence in English-language television, from the John Bassett Theatre at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on November 4, 2002. "These nominations and awards attest to the vibrant and talented film industry that is so alive in this province. I am very proud of all those who have been recognized at this prestigious event for their outstanding contributions to film in Newfoundland and Labrador, and I believe it speaks volumes about the acknowledgment we are receiving from our national peers," said Norm Whalen, chair of the Newfoundland and Labrador Film Development Corporation. To ensure the continued success of the film and video industry in our province, the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation has secured additional funding for the upcoming production, Making Love in St. Pierre (Red Ochre Productions), slated to begin production in the Burin area later this month.
